U.S. Citizenship – naturalization

Naturalization is the process that is followed by a foreign citizen to obtain U.S. citizenship.  There are several different requirements and methods used to qualify for U.S. citizenship via naturalization and below is a common example.  In order to apply for Naturalization (N-400) you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older when you apply
  • You must be a permanent resident for a minimum of five years (requirement may differ in some cases)
  • You must be able to prove that you have had resided in the United States continuously  for a minimum of five years (requirement may differ in some cases)
  • You must be able to speak, read, and write in the basic English language (requirement may differ in some cases)
  • You must have knowledge and understanding of the government and history of the United States (requirement may differ in some cases)
  • You must establish clear history of good moral character
